Research and Scholarship

The Division of Adolescent Medicine had an active research program, and there are a number of independent researchers within the Division, all of whom are excellent mentors.

Catherine Gordon MD, MSc (Associate Professor of Pediatrics, with joint faculty appointments in Adolescent Medicine and Endocrinology) is Director of the Bone Health Center. She won the 2002 New Investigator Award from the Society for Adolescent Medicine for this work and in 2005 the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (one of twelve recognized from the NIH). She has done pioneering work in bone health and vitamin D. She is examining the prevention and treatment of osteopenia in adolescent and young adult women with anorexia nervosa; Vitamin D deficiency in infants; and new methods of examining bone structure using DXA and peripheral CT. She has received funding from the Department of Defense (DOD), an R01, and the Hood and Allen Foundations.

Alison Field, ScD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, is PI of one of the current NIH grants that supports the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS), housed at the Channing Laboratory (2002-2007), examining the development of eating disorders and bulimic behaviors in adolescent girls and boys. She is also PI of an NIH grant to study weight cycling and mortality among the women in the Nurses’ Health Study and just completed an R21 examining weight control and weight change among adolescents using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. She was recently named the Society for Adolescent Medicine 2008 Iris Litt Visiting Professor in Adolescent Research.

Bryn Austin, ScD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, who also directs the Adolescent Health Fellowship Research Training, has carried out numerous projects which have spanned the fields of obesity and eating disorders, studying school-environment influences related to dieting and physical activity, applications of the CDC School Health Index, and contributing environmental influences of adolescent obesity in neighborhoods using the large Chicago Study. She is currently collaborating with the Mass DPH and the Harvard School of Public Health on an intervention titled “Healthy Choices” in 50 middle schools. She is the PI of an R01 to examine health disparities in sexual minority youth, using the GUTS survey. Dr. Austin is also Co-PI of a new RO1 examining the impact of violence on obesity and reproductive health.
Heather Corliss, PhD, was recruited from UCLA to study health disparities in sexual minority youth with Dr. Austin.

Elizabeth Woods, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, was PI of a NIMH R03 to examine the role of provider/patient communication in high risk teens with STDs and provided adolescent medicine expertise for an RWJ Foundation multi-site national 14-year follow-up of high risk infants (McCormick, PI, HSPH). As PI of a MCH Healthy Tomorrows Grant and a foundation grant, Dr. Woods has established the Community Asthma Initiative testing new models of care in neighboring communities. She was the Society for Adolescent Medicine 2005 Iris Litt Visiting Professor in Adolescent Research. An important collaboration between General Pediatrics (Joanne Cox, MD, PI) and Adolescent Medicine (Elizabeth Woods, MD, MPH) is the Young Parents’ Program, “Raising Adolescent Families Together Project,” a demonstration and research grant, funded by the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs (OAPP) (2001-2006).

Lydia A. Shrier, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, has completed a number of studies examining the associations of mood and affect and sexual risk behaviors in adolescents. She has developed an innovative technique of momentary sampling (using PDAs) for acquiring data in teens. Dr. Shrier collaborates with scientists in multiple centers, on projects including STD screening, condom use, and substance abuse. Her work has been funded through a CDC grant, K-23, R21, and several subcontracts. She also serves as the Director of Clinic-based Research of the Adolescent Medicine Division and has been instrumental in assuring that the projects of the many investigators can successfully recruit participants in a large ambulatory clinic.

Michael Rich, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, has developed and implemented Video Intervention/Prevention Assessment (VIA), a ground-breaking research methodology designed to examine illness from the patient perspective (for which he received the 1998 Society for Adolescent Medicine New Investigator Award). VIA provides patients with camcorders and asks them to create visual narratives about their illness experiences. He has applied VIA to the study of young people’s lives with asthma, obesity, spina bifida, and sickle cell disease. He is also the PI of a media literacy project in the Manchester NH schools. Dr. Rich has received funding from the Deborah Munroe Noonan Memorial Fund, a K-23, examining transitions for youth with chronic illness using VIA, the Hood Foundation, the Reeves Foundation, the Cabot Family Charitable Trust, several subcontracts, and significant philanthropy to establish a Center for Media and Child Health in 2002.

Elissa Weitzman, PhD, was recently recruited from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Weitzman focuses on adolescent substance abuse research, supported by RWJ, and is currently working (with funding from the CDC) with Ken Mandl, MD, on the development of the interactive patient centered medical record. Cathryn Samples MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, was PI of one of the 15-site Adolescent Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions (ATN) (2001-2006) and is currently working on adherence in adolescents with HIV.

Sion Kim Harris, PhD, Instructor in Pediatrics, is studying implementation of a science based curriculum for substance abuse prevention in a local charter school and is Co-I on 2 R01 grants on substance abuse with John Knight PI.

Jon Mansbach, MD, Instructor in Pediatrics has grants from Thrasher and Medimmune to conduct a multicenter study on bronchiolitis.

Amy DiVasta, MD, MSc, Instructor in Pediatrics, has a Milton grant to study cardiac function and bone markers in females with anorexia nervosa.

Tracy Richmond, MD, Instructor in Pediatrics, was recently awarded a Hood grant to study health disparities in physical activity and overweight among adolescents.
